Intermediate Rivermouth break Sand bottom Peels left 0.8–3 m Mid tide

A rivermouth sandbank at the mouth of the Mondego, shaped by the harbour jetty into one of the longest left-handers in Portugal. On a solid north-west swell the wave runs for hundreds of metres down the sandbar, fast and workable rather than hollow. It is a genuine rivermouth setup, so the bank shifts with the river and the sand pumping — some seasons it is world class, others it is ordinary. Strong current beside the jetty.

Getting there

South bank of the Mondego at Figueira da Foz, signposted towards the harbour. Park near the jetty; the wave starts off the jetty and runs away from it down the beach.
