Mundaka

Also known as Mundaka rivermouth, Mundaka left

Advanced Rivermouth break Sand bottom Peels left 1–4 m Low tide

One of Europe's best lefts: a long, fast, barrelling rivermouth wave that peels off the Mundaka estuary sandbar over a rock-and-sand bottom. It holds size and can run for several hundred metres on the right swell, but is notoriously fickle — the sandbar shifts with the river flow and it can be flat or broken for months at a time. When it works it is a genuine world-class left, which is why the WSL ran a CT event here (the Billabong Pro Mundaka).

Getting there

Park in Mundaka village and walk to the harbour/rivermouth lookout to check it. Access the water from the harbour slip or the sandbar depending on tide. Strong currents on the outgoing ebb — do not surf near peak ebb flow.
