Waimea Bay

Also known as Waimea, The Bay

Expert Reef break Sand bottom Peels right 4.5–12 m Mid tide

The birthplace of big wave surfing. Waimea Bay only breaks when swells reach 15+ feet and features a massive, steep drop into a churning shore break. First ridden by a small crew in 1957, it revolutionized what surfers thought possible. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational runs here when waves reach 40+ feet. The bay is calm in summer but transforms into a thundering arena in winter.
