Advanced Beach break Sand bottom Peels both 1–3.5 m Mid tide

Europe's most famous barrel. A shallow sandbar off Peniche's south shore throws a fast, hollow, powerful wave that breaks close to dry sand, with both lefts and rights on the right swell. When it's on it is genuinely world class, which is why the WSL ran a championship tour event here for years. When it's not, it closes out. The takeoff is steep and late and the impact zone is shallow enough to matter.

Getting there

Large free car park directly behind the beach, signposted from the EN114 into Peniche. Walk straight over the dune. Fills up completely on a good swell.
